Happy New (School) Year!

For me, New Year’s Day isn’t on January 1st.

It’s on the first day of school.

For many of us, the first day of school might mean meeting all the people in your new class(es), whether virtually or in person. For all of us, it means beginning a new chapter in our academic journeys. For all of us, this will be an unusual year. For all of us, it’s an ideal time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we hope to go.

Many people set resolutions at the start of a new year. We know that New Year's Resolutions are often easily made and easily broken, so let’s call these New (School) Year’s reflections instead. Feel free to write your answers down or just discuss them. However you approach them, I hope you’ll consider the following questions with me, as we all embark on this school year’s journey:

  • Right now, I am excited about...
  • Right now, I am nervous about...
  • Last year, I felt...
  • Last year, I learned...
  • Last year, I got better at... by...
  • Last year, I am proud that I...
  • This year, I want to feel...
  • This year, I want to learn...
  • This year, I want to get better at...
  • This year, I want to continue to be...

Whether you are a teacher, a student, a parent, or another caring adult, I’m looking forward to this year with you. I hope that many wonderful discoveries await you! Let’s set our sights on making it a special year.

Best wishes,
Ms. Sylvia
